UNFINISHED One-act Play

Heartbeat: Last Scene

After the sensual night of the newlywed couple, Rose woke up alone on the king-size bed with the cold breeze outside their hotel room.

[Rose got up from the bed and saw a note.]

Rose: “I’ll be back. – your loving husband, Stein” (with all smile, she proceeds to the kitchen and cook)

Rose: (talking alone) I can’t wait to have a family with you Stein. I can’t wait.

[her phone rings and she run to it]

Rose: Hey, mom? (it is Stein’s mother)

Aly: Uhm honey, come home already.

Rose: But why mom? (confuse) You do know that I am still with Stein in our honeymoon. I can’t leave him here because he’s gone.

Aly: (sobs, then began to cry loudly) Oh yes honey, he’s gone. Wait, how did you know? (shock for a while)

Rose: I just know mom besides he’ll be back in a minute. So, don’t be too emotional again, we’re doing just fine.

Aly: But honey? (fighting the eagerness to tell while crying)

Rose: (sighs) I know mom, you just miss us especially your baby boy, but we’ll come back tomorrow. Okay?

Aly: You don’t understand! (louder voice but with sobs)

Rose: (started to worry but fights it with a smile) Do I?

Aly: We both know he’s dying.  And I owe you for loving him cautiously in spite that. Please come home honey, we promised to take care of you on behalf of him.

Rose: Mom. No! (acting like she does not believe Stein’s mom)

Aly: Then wait and I’ll be there. I will not let you suffer alone. Bear with me.

[Stein’s mom left the house with their family’s car without ending the call.]

Rose: Mom I pretended not to see. (moans when truth started to sink in) He rush to the hospital last night, does he? I pretended asleep; I’ve always been.

Aly: That’s ok honey. He doesn’t want you also to see him in pain. (sounds reassuring)

Rose: But I never thought that this will end so quickly. I never regret pretending not to see until now. I should’ve been there with him mom. I should’ve been holding his hand, maybe he’ll be stronger to fight that stupid cancer.

Aly: Rose (stops for a while), it’s not cancer that killed him. I thought you were aware, that’s why I left him in your hands even if you’re both young. (almost got angry)

Rose: I don’t understand mom.

Aly: You killed my son Rose, with your overflowing love, I think. (monotone)

[No words can be heard at this moment, only the childlike cries of Rose.]
